Last year, I flew to Malta with my friends and our trip became tenfold after discovering an underrated gem just a short ferry ride from our place. And that gem is the Mediterranean island of Gozo. In recent years, Malta’s tourism experienced a sharp surge, with most of the tourists escaping to Gozo. (Statista: Domestic tourists in Malta)
This place is bliss for fans of rugged natural beauty, historic sites, charming villages, and laid-back vibes. We took a boat to explore this place and trust me when I tell you, gliding along the coastline there gave me a unique perspective of Gozo’s most famous sites. From swimming in the endless ocean to partying in our boat, we did it all there.
Want to know more about it? Stay tuned as I tell you all about my experience, and I am sure, by the end of this, a boat trip to Gozo will be in your Maltese itinerary.
Swimming and Snorkelling on the Boat Trip
One of the best experiences in Gozo boat trips is stopping regularly for swimming and snorkeling breaks. The island is surrounded by clear turquoise waters that remain warm well into autumn. We had the chance to jump off the boat and immerse ourselves in the Mediterranean, in spots where there were hardly any other tourists. We also went snorkeling to marvel at colorful fish and seagrass meadows hidden below the surface.
DO YOU KNOW? With an increasing number of people showing interest in activities like snorkelling and scuba diving, the diving tourism market is on the rise and is projected to be valued at $10,780.57 million by 2032.
Explore Gozo’s Spectacular Coastline
Admiring the island’s dramatic coastline up close was a highlight of the boat trip. Gliding along the northwest coast, I remained awestruck by the sight of monumental layered cliffs, secluded pebble beaches tucked into coves, and thrilling natural arches carved out by the sea.
Looking at the varied coastal scenery, changing from one moment to the next, was a treasured experience in itself. I had my camera ready and captured the iconic landmarks like the Fungus Rock, Crocodile Rock, and Ta’ Ġurdan Lighthouse. Traveling by boat allowed us to reach stunning vantage points and truly appreciate Gozo’s unique seascapes.
Visit the Blue Lagoon
How could any trip to Gozo be complete without stopping at the famous Blue Lagoon? Swimming and sunbathing in the turquoise waters and white sand seabed of this sheltered inlet on Comino was an incredible joy. How can I forget the dazzling photos we took there, it is the perfect place for those who love taking pictures for their Instagram or Pinterest.
After a day full of exciting activities, we relaxed here with a drink at the Blue Lagoon’s lively café, strolled the boardwalks around the bay, and ended our day at a quiet spot on the rocks soaking up the scenery.
Local Expert Skippers
By booking a boat trip to Gozo, we got an experienced local skipper at the helm. With his expert knowledge of the island, our Gozitan skipper took us to the prettiest swimming spots and best places to spot marine life.
He also shared fascinating anecdotes and insider information that we couldn’t have discovered traveling by land. Since the Skippers are well-skilled at navigating the potentially choppy waters and strong currents around Gozo’s shores, we had no worries and relaxed safely in their capable hands.
Boat Party Atmosphere
A major part of the trip was soaking up the relaxed, convivial vibe on board. We laid back on deck chairs, blasted our favorite music, and ordered drinks from the boat’s bar while between bays, and this was a simple yet exciting experience on its own. Many boat tours around Gozo have an inclusive drinks package to keep the good times flowing! As I was touring with my friends, this was a fun way for us to spend quality time together rather than sightseeing independently. The shared experience creates wonderful holiday memories.
FUN FACT Locally known as Ghawdex, to the outside world it is known as Gozo, which translates as joy.
Comfort Onboard
I know some of you might be concerned about the environment and comfort level of the boat, well, most modern boats that operate tours around Gozo are designed for comfort, stability, and shade from the strong Mediterranean sun.
We had cushioned seating both in the cabin and on deck, with tables for food and drinks. Larger boats also have air-conditioned interior cabins where you can take a break from the sun. Most boats have onboard toilets, as well.
In the end, I can just say that a boat trip exploring the beautiful island of Gozo offers an utterly enjoyable escape. It allowed us to experience Gozo’s best sceneries while swimming, snorkelling, savoring onboard refreshments, and simply soaking up the laid-back vibe.
With an expert local skipper at the helm, we discovered various hidden coves and learned about Gozo’s rich culture and history from an illuminating new perspective – all while creating beautiful memories for life and capturing amazing photos out on the water. So, are you convinced now to take a boat tour around this Mediterranean jewel, which is undoubtedly one of the most fantastic things to do during a holiday in Malta?
