“Trains are wonderful… To travel by train is to see nature and human beings, towns, and churches and rivers, in fact, to see life”

 — Agatha Christie (Writer)

Have you ever been to India? Well, I have, and it’s wonderful not only the culture but the geography is epic. And, what’s the best way to travel here? Well, it would be its most popular and extensive rail network.

But have you ever wondered what’s the difference between a sleeper class and an AC first class? Or perhaps you’re just curious about the variety of seating options available here in the Indian railways?

If so, you’ve just come to the right place, as in this read I will be explaining to you the intricacies of Indian railways seating options. From its most budget-friendly general class to the luxurious presidential suite. Let’s get straight into it!

Air-Conditioned Travel Classes in Indian Railways

The air-conditioned class that is abbreviated as AC on Train Tickets or the websites is an expensive and yet the most comfortable one among all. This AC class is further divided into four categories, here take a look at them one by one:

1. Air-Conditioned Executive Chair Class (EC)

Air-Conditioned Executive Chair Class (EC)

EC Is the most premium and expensive class of the Indian railway, which is probably why it is only available in some specific express trains such as Tejas, Gatimaan, or Shatabdi Express.

The ticket fare is almost equivalent to the domestic to domestic flight fare. It has a 2+2 seat configuration, with ample space and privacy. The best thing about the ride is that it features a foldable table and a screen attached to the back for your entertainment, along with some complimentary snacks and meals. This is a popular choice for business travellers who are looking for a pleasant short journey.

2. Air-Conditioned First Class (1AC)

Air-Conditioned First Class (1AC)

If you’re looking for some superior privacy and comfort, then going for a 1AC might be the perfect option here. The compartments here are clean, spacious, and well-maintained with lockable doors. The bedding items include sheets, pillows, blankets, and towels offering superior comfort to your journey.

3. AC 2-Tier Class

 AC 2-Tier Class

From nearly half the ticket price to first class, AC 2-tier class is perfect for long-distance travel. It has two upper and lower berths in each compartment, along with 2 side berths (One Lower and One Upper), which are on the other side of the aisle. While there are no doors in each compartment, curtains are available for privacy concerns.

4. AC 3-Tier Class

AC 3-Tier Class

AC 3-tier class is among the most popular choices for budget travellers, who are looking for a comfortable journey at a reasonable price. It is an open-plan room with six berths (Two Lower, Two Middle, and Two Upper) along with 2 side berths like the AC 2-tier class.

Unlike the AC 2-tier class, this doesn’t have curtains available for privacy, which makes it not so suitable for those who are seeking privacy.

Do You Know?

India has the fourth-largest railway network in the world, with over 22,593 operating trains and a 24 million daily passenger count.

Non-AC Classes of Travel

For those seeking a budget-friendly ride, Non-AC classes consist of a range of seating from all luxury to cost-effective, this includes:

1. First Class (FC)

First Class (FC)

With the same layout as the first-class AC but without the Air Conditioner. It is actually not present in most trains nowadays, but in some older ones though. And regarding all the facilities and services, it is just like the first-class AC, which makes it perfect for those seeking privacy at lower rates.

2. AC Chair Class (CC)

AC Chair Class (CC)

As the name suggests, it is a chair class that has three seats on one side and two on the other. This is often available in short-distance or daytime trains, making it an affordable and comfortable ride for journeys lasting less than five hours.

Sleeper Class (SL)

 Sleeper Class (SL)

Similar to the AC 3-tier class but without the air conditioner, the sleeper class does not include the bedding items, however, they can be requested for some additional cost. This is particularly beneficial for those on a tight budget.

4. Second Class (2S)

 Second Class (2S)

2S is probably the least expensive seating option on the Indian railway. It typically consists of two rows of wooden benches that can accommodate about three passengers. It offers a 3+3 seating arrangement, which must be booked in advance.

5. Unreserved/General Class (2S)

Unreserved/General Class (2S)

The unreserved class is the most affordable travelling option in India, which doesn’t even require you to book the travel ticket in advance. However, as expected it is always overcrowded, noisy and smelly and passengers who don’t get a seat often lie or sit on the floor, making it an uncomfortable ride.

How Do You Choose The Seat Type On Indian Railways?

Your decision to choose the right seat type for your journey can depend on a multitude of factors. This includes how much privacy and comfort are you looking for, how long is the trip, and most importantly, how much money are you willing to spend on your ticket. By considering these options, you can ensure a comfortable experience with all the enjoyment you need.

Conclusion

In brief, the Indian railway consists of nearly every combination of budget and comfort that one can think of. From the air-conditioned to the non-air-conditioned options, passengers can create a perfect seating plan for their journey that best suits their budget. However, after booking your seat it’s also crucial to stay in touch with what’s happening with the Train Running Status, as it will ensure that you reach the station on time, making your journey smoother.
