Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga Temple History and Legend

The origin of the Srisailam temple can be traced back to the 6th century BCE. Evidence even suggests that the temple existed even during the reign of the Ikshvaku dynasty, followed by successive rulers from the Pallava, Chalukya, Kakatiya, and Vijayanagara empires, each contributing to its growth and architectural grandeur.

The Legend of Mallikarjuna Temple

Srisailam mallikarjuna swamy

Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga Temple’s legend is a fascinating tale of divine competition, familial love, and the manifestation of the divine in nature. I think this is one divine tale that everyone practicing Hinduism must have heard at least once.

Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati had two sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya. They couldn’t decide who was more worthy to be married first. To settle this, they devised a contest—whoever circled the world three times first would win.

Kartikeya’s vehicle is a peacock, and thus confident and determined to win the challenge, he sets off to circle the world. Ganesh’s vehicle was, however, a mouse and, in no way, faster than Kartikeya.

But Ganesha is known for wisdom, so he cleverly circumambulated his parents, arguing that they were his world. This is what impressed Shiva and Parvati, and they declared Ganesha the winner and arranged his marriage to Siddhi (spiritual powers) and Riddhi (prosperity).

His brother’s marriage disheartened Kartikeya, and he was so upset that he decided to remain unmarried and retreated to Mount Krounch (believed to be modern-day Palani).

Shiva and Parvati missed their son and went to visit him. On seeing his parents, Kartikeya tried to move further away but stayed nearby on Devas request.

The place where Shiva and Parvati stayed came to be known as Srisailam. It is believed that at Srisailam, Lord Shiva manifested as Mallikarjuna, the Jyotirlinga, while Parvati manifested as Bhramaramba, the Shakti Peetha.

Significance of Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple Srisailam

Srisailam Mallikarjuna Temple is one of the twelve most sacred abodes of Lord Shiva. The name ‘Mallikarjuna’ derives from the fact that the Linga was worshipped with jasmine (Mallika) flowers.

This unique distinction of being both a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peeth became a strong representation of the union of Shiva and Parvati.

The devotees also believe that this is a must-visit Shiv temple and brings them closer to the divine and bestows blessings of prosperity, happiness, and spiritual growth.
